Cost of Starting a Blog in Kenya Revealed

0

A friend of mine inquired of me what the cost of starting a blog in Kenya was. I quickly understood his predicament.

I was at the same place several years ago when I decided to start this blog. It could be that you are having the same question.

I will answer the question using two ways we can look at it. However even before we look at this, the cost starting a blog in Kenya depends on

  • Cost of domain
  • Hosting
  • Website design
  • Theme

However, it would be unfair to leave you here. Therefore, what I am going to do is to let you walk with me as we explore this topic together.

Now, if you have decided to start a blog, you have two options here.

One is to pay a web designer to do it for you. Second, is to build it yourself. Either way, there is a cost involved.

Cost of starting a blog in Kenya: Two Ways to Do it.

1. Pay a web designer.

If you have money and do not have time to sit down and build a blog, you can pay someone to do it for you. In Kenya, there are many companies that offer these services at a fee.

And a good website or blog cost anything above Ksh. 5000.00. I have been doing research on this topic and found out that the average price of building a website in Kenya is about Ksh. 15000.00.

Some website developers will charges you Ksh.20000.00. Nevertheless, all this depends on the functionality of the blog or website you want to set up.

I have seen clients asked to pay as much Ksh. 100000.00 for an E-Commerce site.

If you are going to choose this method, then be sure to have anything between Ksh.5000.00 to Ksh.100000.00.

Once you have paid, the designer with consultation with you will set up everything for you and deliver your blog or website in 3 days or more.

However, there are disadvantages of using this route; here are four things website designers in Kenya will not tell you.

2. Build the blog yourself

Yeah I love the idea of building a blog by yourself. Why? Because you begin learning how to maintain your blog.

I always repeat this, that learning how to start a blog in your own puts you in the driver’s seat. Besides, you can easily control the cost of starting such a blog in Kenya.

I am going to take you the same steps I took to set up this blog and the cost I inquired. Thereafter we will add up and see how much it cost me.

To cost of starting a blog will require the following;

Domain Name( Mandatory)

A domain is what gives your blog its address on the World Wide Web. Domain names usually begin with www. …..or http://www….

For example, this site domain name is http://shopinkenya.com

Registering a domain name is straightforward process. However, you may need to take more time to get the best name.

Once you done you have it, you can register here locally or abroad. I would prefer you use a host such as Bluehost, Hostgator or Siteground.

Domain names cost as cheap as US$0.01 to US$ 20.00 per year. In fact, some hosting companies give you free domain names if you buy hosting.

On domain name, it could cost you nothing to US$ 20.00 at the start.

Pro Tip: One way of getting a good domain name is to try to go through dropped domain names and see if you can get what you want. Besides, an old domain can make you pages rank fast.

Hosting( Mandatory)

Hosting is extremely important for this is where you store your files online. We have many hosting companies in Kenya, but I would recommend that you go for a reputable company out there. Moreover, there are so many of them.

Hosting your blog can cost you a few shillings to thousands of shillings. Again, this depends with your needs.

If you are beginning a blog, you may not want to spend so much. So go for a cheap but reliable host. For example, blue host have plans as low as US$ 2.50 per month.

For hosting, you can spend Ksh. 500 to Ksh 50000.00

Pro Tip:  Most hosting companies are cheap when you pay for a longer period. I would advise you pay a longer period to give you more time to focus on content creation. Besides, if you are shopping around for a host, some may offer you a domain for free.

Theme ( Optional)

Is you are intending to use WordPress as you Content Management System, you can opt to buy a premium theme. The theme I use here cost me US$ 65.00 about Ksh. 6500.00.

Hover this is an optional cost, for there are thousands of free themes on WordPress to use. You can buy a premium them on Theme Forest if you wish to.

The cost of starting your own blog in Kenya is so small.

If you wish to start a blog on your own, he can read this complete guide.

It is more fulfilling to do it own you own.

Conclusion

Now let us do the math.

If you are paying a designer to do it for you, the average cost is Ksh. 15000.00.

If you are doing it yourself, it could cost you about Ksh. 5000.00

The cost of starting a blog in Kenya is quite affordable. Should you need a website or website to be built for you, you can hire me.

Blogging Business In Kenya: Truth Nobody Told You

0

You want to start a blogging business in Kenya. Not so fast, not until you have read this blog post that lays bare the truth and nothing but the truth.

I do not mean to discourage you, but there millions of blogs that are set-up every day and 90% of them do not reach their first birthday.

The truth is, the odds are stacked against you and it is easier to win a Sportpesa jackpot than build a successful blog in Kenya today.

Just look at these domain names that are dropped every day in Kenya and you realize that it will not be easy. Blogging in Kenya is a business that is already saturated, and unless you bringing something new on the table, you would better, try your luck somewhere else.

However, since you want to know the truth, I give it, as you want it.

Blogging Business in Kenya; what you need to know.

Takes time to build.

One of the mistakes I made when I began blogging was the assumption that I would be an instant celebrity by creating a blog and throwing up some pages here and there and assuming that people would find it. How wrong I was. I failed so many times that I almost gave up.

A blog takes so much time to build, in fact research show that a successful blog take about 2 years of serious work. The is so much you need to do for big brother Google to appreciate that you offer anything meaningful. For it is Google and other search engines that will determine whether you get to the first page or not. Getting to first page (the goal of all serious bloggers) is the ultimate prize. For this drives traffic and traffic in blogging circles equals money.

There are things you need to know before even thinking of starting a blogging business in Kenya. The most important is how to optimize your blog for search engines and humans. Thus most of the time you will be reading to understand Site Engine Optimization (SEO), website design and other technical stuff that will make you succeed.

Unless of course you want to pay someone(there is a cost involved) to do this for you, which I would strongly not advice. It better to have the technical skills yourself for blogging services do not come cheap.

This blog took about 3 months before I saw the first visitors. And for your information, a few visitors won’t make you any money.

If you are thinking of quitting your job to start a blogging business in Kenya, I have very bad news for you, stick to your awful job!

To break even and replace your day job, you have to work very hard and be willing to put in over a year of time. You need to drive serious traffic to your blog.

Besides, maintaining a blog is an expensive affair; you will have to put in lots of money with no return on investment.

Behind that successful blog you see, there is sacrifice, tears, sweats and sleepless nights. I have to wake up at night and work on something that came to my mind as I slept.

All I am saying is that if you are not willing to be very patient, then look for something else to do. Success won’t come overnight.

Not a reliable business.

Having a day job guarantees you that at the end of the month, your bank account will be smiling. The same cannot be said about blogging business. One month you can be on top of the world and the other you are nowhere!

In blogging, money comes when you rank on the first page of Google (by the way Google accounts for most blog visitors). If you cannot be found on the first page, you have no business blogging for money.

Now let us say that you doing well with most of your pages ranking well, then overnight Google updates their algorithms(how they rank pages) and viola you are not found among the first pages!

It only means one thing, And no traffic means no money!

And as I often joke, if you looking for where to bury dead bodies, then do it on page 2 of google search results. Nobody goes there!

That is the better scenario.

What if someone hacked into your blog and wiped all your data away? It means your hard work is all gone accompanied by your income!

Off course, you may begin afresh, but Google believes in the old saying that old wine tastes better. You may take even longer time to get where you are now.

Nothing is guaranteed in blogging!

Run it like any other business.

This is often one of the biggest sins committed by aspiring bloggers (there are other bigger sins). If you cannot give blogging the seriousness it deserves, you are going nowhere.

Blogging means coming up with serious content for consumers at scheduled intervals. However, there are those days that you do not feel like doing anything. I too have those same feelings.

You have to push yourself to do what you ought to do. You have to treat this as a serious business.

Moreover, you need to spy on your competitors, remember you are not alone, there are other people working on what you are already thinking about.

Must be unique.

You would be a fool to try setting up a shop to sell bananas on a street that is full of such shops. To get your first customer, you will really need to convince them that your kind of bananas are imported from the moon.

Unless you are offering something unique, you will be another failure statistics. Let me bring you to perspective. Let us say you want to start a technology blog in Kenya, you have a mountain to climb. For there are so many of that kind and well established.

Bring something unique on the table and success will be smiling your way.

Can be rewarding.

This is what you have been longing to hear. Yes, a successful blog can make you money. I know of a few friends that over about Ksh. 100,000 a month from their blogs. That is not little money in a country where most of us live on a dollar (Ksh. 100) a day.

With serious work and determination, you can make a name for yourself and your bank account.

Now that you know how what blogging business in Kenya is like, it time to build your blog. Here is a complete guide on how to start a blog that will bring hundreds of thousands of shillings monthly.

How to monetize your blog

This is how you make money of your blog. At this point, I am assuming that you have already set up a blog and you are already getting some visitors.

I am going to discuss the common ways bloggers monetize their blogs.

Run ads.

This is by far the easiest way to earn money on your business blog in Kenya. All you have to do is apply and once approved, you place codes on your blog to show ads.

Your blog for most of these publishers must meet minimum traffic, content and design requirements. The most common are

  • Google Adsense
  • MediaNet by Yahoo and Bing.
  • Propelar Ads
  • Chitika
  • RevContent
  • PopAds
  • Adsterra
  • Inforlinks
  • PopCash
  • Taboola
  • Mgid

Become an affiliate.

Becoming an affiliate is promoting other peoples or companies products on your blog. You earn a commission when someone buys the products through your affiliate link.

The most popular companies that seek affiliates in Kenya are

  • Jumia
  • Kilimall
  • Betin
  • Travelstart
  • Kenya Pesa

You can also sign up for popular international companies as an affiliate. These are

  • Amazon and
  • Ebay

Sell ad space.

You can sell space on your blog to people or companies willing to advertise on your blog. This is very lucrative for you decide the price of each ad sport.

Create own products to sell.

You can decide to sell your own products. This again makes you the driver. You can sell whatever you feel will move. However, you may also consider these items that really move fast in Kenya.

Become a Coach

If you are a professional in a certain area, you can takes your skills online and offer them at a fee. This could be law, teaching, counselling, professional business advice or any other field.

Conclusion

Anybody can start a blogging business in Kenya. However, not everyone will be successful. Starting a blog just like any other business require serious strategy and vision.

Most successful blogs begun as a side hustles and have taken time to grow. If you are ready for the challenge ahead, welcome aboard.

How to Pre-Order on Jumia;A Simple Guide.

0

Here we learn how to pre-order on Jumia. In the past few days, I have written articles that require that you pre-order items on Jumia.

The Huawei Y6 2019, Infinix Hot 7 and the Infinix Hot 7 Pro phones were recently launched in Kenya. Usually before they are officially launched and available in Kenya, Jumia may ask that anyone interested in such items, make a pre-order.

And most of you have been asking how to pre-order on Jumia. It is with this understanding that I decided to write a simple yet complete guide on this topic.

Let us do this.

Read Also:

Steps on how to pre-order on Jumia

Pre-ordering is quite simple on Jumia. Just follow these simple steps.

Make sure you have an account with Jumia

It is very likely that you have an account with Jumia. It makes sense that you cannot make any purchase unless you have the said account.

In case you do not have an account, you can read this guide here to get started.

Identify the product to pre-order

Again, it could be that you already have the product you want to buy in mind. The only difference is that instead of seeing the ‘Buy Now’ button, you see the ‘Pre-order’ button’.

Hit the pre-order button.

If you do that, you will be taken to a checkout page. Here you will be required to pay the full amount of the item. Please do so.

You can easily pay via Mpesa. Once your payment has been made and confirmed, you have successfully placed the order. The delivery will be made at your address.

Conclusion

Placing a pre-order on Jumia is no different from the normal purchasing of items. There are however two major differences;

  • One, you have to make the full payment unlike the normal purchases where you can pay on delivery. You have to pay in advance.
  • Two, the items are usually not within the country, and have to be imported. This makes delivery time longer than usual.

With this, you can make your first pre-order. If you get any difficulties, contact me for help. I am always ready to assist.

Happy shopping!

Safaricom Takes Fuliza Overdraft Facility Global.

0

Safaricom has announced that M-pesa Fuliza Overdraft Facility will go global. It seeks to expand to seven more African countries.

The company seeks to tap into micro-loans sector that has seen demand rise in the last few years. Fuliza launched in Kenya on January 5th through a partnership of Safaricom, KCB Group and the Commercial Bank of Africa. Today, it very popular with M-Pesa users in Kenya.

Already M-Pesa has gone global with the services being offered in some other African countries besides Kenya where it begun. Based on the success of M-Pesa abroad, Fuliza will be introduced in countries namely Tanzania, Ghana, The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lesotho, and Mozambique.

These countries are already using M-Pesa services through Safaricom’s parent company Vodacom. For this reason, its penetration is expected to be easy.

How Fuliza works

Fuliza is an overdraft facility that allows users to top-up loans whenever they want to make transactions. In Kenya, borrowers can take up to Ksh.70000.00 (US$ 700) which they can use to pay bills or buy goods.

The Credit facility attracts 1.08% of the value of the money borrowed daily, which translates to over 395% per annum.

Unlike other loans, you have 30 days to pay and you can longer use the service after the 30 days if you default.

Speaking Safaricom Chief Finance officer Sitoyo Lopokoiyit said, ‘there are seven African counties that run M-Pesa and we will be looking into taking Fuliza into those markets first.’

He added that, ‘there are over 60 organizations offering credit in Kenya and if you look at the way Fuliza has been designed as an overdraft, the fee is actually small when you look at how people quickly pay.’

He further noted that, ‘It is not a loan. We are listening to our customers and we think it is priced right.’

Safaricom notes that it created Fuliza from the knowledge that millions of transactions were cancelled daily due to insufficient funds.
