My brother my sister, you are not late. Thank God that your eyes have been opened now. Welcome to this guide on how to sell online in Kenya.
You may not make as much money as these companies do, but how about making just a fraction of this? Believe you me, learning how to sell online in Kenya is not easy, but if you master this model of business, you will be smiling all the way to the bank.
I once read of a story of a guy who made so much money
selling online that he left Kiambu for Dubai within a span of a month.
But why should you even care about how to sell online in
Kenya?
It is a well-known fact that Kenya has the highest penetration
of mobile phones in Africa. Coupled with the fact we have Mpesa wallets with
us, online shopping is something we cannot wish away.
If you doubt what I am saying, ask Jumia about their
turnover on a daily basis. Also, ask Safaricom why they began Masoko.
Even out next-door stores and supermarkets, have their
online versions.
Online shopping is something you cannot wish away, and if
you are an entrepreneur, who wants to learn how to sell online in Kenya, you
have taken the right road.
How to choose a platform to sell on.
There are 4 ways to go about this. Here they are.
Create a blog/ E-Commerce store/ Website.
Become a seller on Jumia or Kilimall.
Do Drop shipping.
Sell on Social Media.
Let us get deeper into this.
1. Create a blog/ E-Commerce store/ Website.
Creating a blog, a website or even an E-commerce site is an
option you can consider. The advantage is that you have control of your own
site and can reach millions of potential buyers very easily.
Sites such as Jumia, Kilimall or Masoko are E-commerce sites. You can also create a website or pay someone to create a website for you. Then add an E-commerce store on it.
You could even begin a blog if you are a good writer, and add a shop on to it.
Whichever the case, you will have begun showing your products and services to online shoppers. I did write how to start a blog in Kenya guide you can follow if you have time to do so.
However creating a blog/website/E-commerce site is the easier part. The problem is you may create a website, blog or an E-Commerce site that people may not see.
Moreover, you will be competing with other well-established
sites for customers. And boy/girl, you will be given a run for your money.
I may not advice you going this route unless
You have deep pockets that can flex your muscles before your competitors.
You are tech savvy and know what it takes to maintain an online store.
You know about Site Engine Optimization (SEO).
Are ready to employ people to help you manage the site. Imagine getting 100 online orders within minutes and have no idea where to begin. If you fail your customers, they may leave for good.
That said, if you are ready for the challenge, you could
take it on. I also advice taking this route if you have a physical store and
want to expand your reach online.
2.Become a seller on Jumia or Kilimall.
For anyone interested in how to sell online in Kenya, this
is by far the easiest route to follow.
Why am I saying so?
Because within minutes, you can have your products in front
of millions of potential buyers. It is by far the easier option since,
Only need to apply to become a seller on Jumia or Kilimall.
You only list your products and leave the rest to Jumia or Kilimall.
You do not need to know Site Engine Optimization (SEO).
Both offer training on how to run your business.
Both have millions of followers and your products can move very fast.
That said; remember that these platforms do not offer these
services free. You pay a particular percentage of the value of the products
that are sold.
Remember the guy I talked about who left Kiambu for Dubai,
he moved so many products on Jumia during a promotional week that he made
millions within days.
Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment method where a store does
not keep the products it sells in stock. Instead, when a store sells a product,
it purchases the item from a third party and has it shipped directly to the
customer. As a result, the seller (you) never sees or handles the product.
The main difference between this method and the first two is
that you do not handle any inventory and you do not own any products.
You act as an intermediary, buying cheaply and selling at a
profit.
Dropshipping is not well developed in Kenya. However, if you
have literally little capital to begin with, this the route to take.
This is what you need to do:
Go sign up at https://www.shopify.com, this is the best option though there are other options.
Create a store on shopify.
Look for products to dropship.
Add the products on your store.
Advertise your store to the world.
The down side of this method is that, you will need to do
lots of SEO, for your store to make any traction.
But should people know about it and you have the right
products, you could be a self-made millionaire in no time.
4. Sell on Social Media.
This is by far the cheapest and easiest way to sell online. All you need to do is share you product to Facebook groups, on you Facebook page, and Instagram page.
This is the easiest way to learn how sell online in Kenya.
To become more professional, you can create a nice Facebook business page. Facebook allows you set up a shop on your page.
Once you have created a Facebook business page, you can list your products there. However, you will need to create a large following thus creating a brand of your own.
People usually do not buy products, they buy brands. If Messi decided to sell T-shits to day online, he would sell millions of them. If he gave you the same T-shirts, you would find it hard selling the same to your own brother or sister.
That is how powerful a brand is. Messi is a brand while you
are no brand.
Conclusion
Learning how to sell online in Kenya, could open you another door to earn an income during these difficult economic times. Moreover, you could just find that breakthrough you have been looking for.
If you are looking for items to sell, you can read about that here. If you have your own products to sell, well, I hope this guide helps you finally launch your online business. Â

What you need to know about transacting on M-Pesa in 2019.
Even as we talk about Mpesa rates, there are a few things you need to know. Though there a few things that have changed, much remains the same.
Have a look.
Your M-Pesa wallet can hold upto a maximum of Ksh. 100,000.00.
You can send a maximum Ksh. 140,000.00. However you need to do this in two transactions of Ksh.70,000.00 each.
The minimum you can send at Ksh. 50.00.
You cannot deposit directly to someone else’s M-Pesa Wallet.
Nowadays M-pesa will not ask for a physical ID card, but will enter your id number to complete the transaction.
M-Pesa transactions, earn you bong points.
With Fuliza, you do not have to worry about the money in your wallet. You can borrow from Fuliza to complete the transaction.
With Mpesa global, you can send and receive money to other countries.
Conclusion.
Today we cannot do without M-Pesa for we do almost all our transactions on phone. I did write about Mpesa App and how smartphones are changing the way we transact on Mpesa.
But do we really have to worry about Mpesa rates with the introduction of Fuliza?

I have been blogging for a while and I did set up this blog in just two weeks. As of writing this article, this blog was just two month old and already receiving 5000 visits a day.
How To Start a Blog in Kenya?
The short answer is; 1. Register a good domain name. 2. Find a good host and pay for hosting. 3. Get a good theme. 4. Write your first post and connect to the world.
But how do I get started? This question is probably disturbing you at this minute. Just take a cup of coffee and let us begin this journey. Here is the long answer.
Differences between a Blog and a Website.
But before we look at how to start a blog in Kenya, let us answer one question, what is a blog? And how is it different from a website?
A blog, also known as a weblog is an online journal or
informational website displaying information in the reverse chronological
order, with latest posts appearing first. It is a platform where a writer or
even a group of writers share their views on an individual subject.
Techweez.com,tech-ish.com or even this site are examples blogs.
Individuals such as Victor Matara, Nyakundi and Robert Alai are very well known bloggers in Kenya. What they own are blogs.
A website on the other hand is a collection of publicly
accessible, interlinked Web pages that share a single domain name. Websites can
be created and maintained by an individual, group, business or organization to
serve a variety of purposes.
Think of sites such as safaricom.co.ke or jumia.co.ke, these are examples of websites. Website nowadays have blogs on them that give information periodically.
Why should you start a blog in Kenya in 2024?
There may be many reasons to this. Some for leisure, others to share information but to some, create a means of earning some money.
Whichever the case, starting a blog can keep you busy and at the same time sharpen your writing skills.
I always wrote articles in high school for the press club, though I was not very good in English. I found out that I would write article in books and diaries. When I discovered that, I could share these articles online, the idea to start this blog was born.
But it was not as easy as I thought, I failed so many times. If you want to start a blog in Kenya and succeed immediately, you are in for a rough ride.
From my experiences, I bring you the beginner’s guide to start a blog in Kenya in 2020.
Getting Ready
To start a successful blog in Kenya in 2022, you need to build a solid foundation. Blogs that are built in rush usually fail to make any impact.
In fact most blogs unless build as a hobby and for leisure,
usually fail within a year of launching.
I have been on that route I know.
So how do you prepare?
Follow these steps below.
Brainstorm Ideas to write about.
Write at least 10 articles.
Have a functional credit card.
What do I mean by this? Let us get deeper into this.
1.Brainstorm Ideas to write about.
A blogger who writes about anything and everything is no blogger. Therefore, you have to find your rhythm and find a topic that you are going to write about. For you to start a blog in Kenya, you have to brainstorm.
This could be cooking, football, shopping, poetry, business or anything that you know much about.
Researching on topics which is commonly referred as to a
niche in blogging circles, is what I call brainstorming.
As a rule, look for a topic which you are conversant with, a
topic with good traffic (people are likely going to read it) and not too wide.
What do I mean by too wide? Let us say you want to write about sports. For starters, this is a very wide topic. There are literally hundreds of sports out there. Unless you are Nation Media House, you will not make any impact.
So if I were you, would look at it this way;
Sports˃ football˃ Kenya premier league.
So I will write about the Kenya premier league, which would
not be too wide.
But again, it would be a bad idea about to write about Kenya Premier league, for you will have to contend with heavy weights such as Nation Media House, the StandardMedia Group or Royal Media Services who have established sites that will give you a run for your money.
Unless off course you just to create a blog that no one cares about.
Therefore, if I were you I would write about how to prepare
tasty Kenyan meals. This niche would be not very competitive and you may just
have audience who what to learn about that.
Moreover, choosing a niche that is not so wide brings you out as a professional in field.
This step is very important if you want to start a successful blog in Kenya.
Unless you just want to have fun, this is a must do!
This should take you a few minutes to even a week.
2. Write good articles ( blog posts).
Once you have settled on a topic to write about, write about 10 good keyword rich articles. You articles should be informative and focused on a single topic.
More importantly, you should be original, no copy pasting. If you are thinking going that route, you would spend your energy elsewhere. You are bound to fail if you go that route.
I would recommend writing blog posts that are about 800 words long.
3. Have a credit card.
Unless you want to use free platforms ( I will be explaining that in a while) where no one will ever find you, you would better have some money to buy some services.
To begin this blog, I had about Ksh. 10000.00(US$100.00)
How to start a blog in Kenya in 5 steps.
Listed below are 5 steps you will need to follow to make your blog dream a reality. The beauty of these all is that if you have prepared yourself as discussed above, this will take a few hours.
Here are the steps.
1. Choose a blogging platform.
2. Choose a web host.
3. Set up a blog on you domain.
4. Design you blog.
5. Add your content.
6. Useful resources for your blog.
Let us look at this one by one and start a blog in Kenya; you would better fill your cup with more coffee.
1. Choose a blogging platform.
A blogging platform is where you want to build your blog.
There are over 10 blogging platforms to build your blog on.
But shouldn’t I just tell you which one to use? I will, but learn a few things first.
Here are some of the blogging platforms.
WordPress-Self Hosted
WordPress- Hosted
Drupal
Blogger
Tumblr
Blogsmith
Now if you have not heard of about WordPress, then I do not know what to tell you.
WordPress
I may just need to tell you that it is the most popular blogging platform. Over 100 million blogs are hosted on WordPress.
Numbers do not lie. Have a look below.
How popular WordPress is.
This is the blogging platform to use. However, there are two
options, hosted and self-hosted. We go with self-hosted.
Here is why we choose WordPress.
Super easy set-up and is free to use.
Millions of free themes and layouts.
There is a massive support forum in case you are stuck(you will not, but it is nice to have it there if you need it).
Your blog will be insanely fast and it will look functionality and form – perfect!
People can interact with you easily. Your content can be shared, commented on, and much more.
2. Choose a web host.
A web host is a company that will give you space to store your files. Your blog files need to be stores on servers where the information can be retrieved when users look for it.
But the big question is do you use free alternative or of
self hosted?
Let us look at the two.
Free Alternative.
All of us like free things. But as they say, cheap is expensive. Most blogging platforms such as WordPress, Blog spot or Tumblr have free options.
Here are the down side of free alternative.
1. You do not own the domain
Your domain will look like this
yourblog.wordpress.com
yourblog.blogspot.com
yourblog.tumblr.com
This does not look good I can tell you and a blog will not be easily found on search engines.
Just google any term and see if you will see a domain that looks that way.
2. You have limits
When something is free, you have limitations. If you looking to create a great blog you will have so many limitations on a free platforms.
3. You do not own your blog.
This might shock you but you do not own your blog. You might wake up one morning and find it gone.
Self- hosted.
If you are seriously considering creating a super blog, this is the route to go. Here is what you have with self-hosted option.
1. You have a custom domain.
2. You have flexibility. You can create a blog to your
taste.
3. The blog belongs to you. You own i and can even sell it.
Now that we settled on self-hosting, you will need to choose a web host. There are tens of good hosting companies out there to choose from. Companies such as Bluehost, Hostgator, Siteground, Hostinger, iPage and many more offer hosting services.
In most cases, hosting cost anything from US$10.00 to US$
100.00 per year. Choose what suits you. Though you may need to do some research
about this.
If you do not have time to do that, I would recommend using Bluehost or Siteground.
You will have to pay for this with your credit card and once
done, you are on you way to setting up your blog.
There are also companies in Kenya that offer hosting services, however I have not tried them and am not sure they will stand your demands are your blog grows.
Choose a domain name.
One more thing, you will need a domain name. A domain name is the address where internet users can access your website.
The good news is that most web hosting
companies will give you a free domain name. If they do not offer one, domain
names are cheap and cost about US$10 per year.
A good domain name should;
Reflect what your blog is all about.
Short. (Though most short names names are taken, try to keep is as short as possible)
Avoid hyphen between the words. Have something like shopinkenya.com and not shop-in-kenya.com
Use a .com extension, it is the commonly used most people will add it to words to try to guess a domain. However, there is no harm in using .co.ke extension.
3. Set up a blog on your domain.
Having paid for hosting and a domain name, it
is time to set up your blog on your domain.
This is how you do it.
Sign into your hosting account. Here you will see many files but take time to learn about each. You should also be very careful about changing stuff, which could cause problems.
Here you will have to install WordPress
files. Most web hosts offer once click installation. Should you have any
problems, the hosting company support should assist.
But remember you have to point your domain to your blog.
Once you have installed Word press, all you have to do to start blogging is go to your WP-Admin page usually www.yourblognamehere.com/wp-admin and start writing by adding a new post.

You can play around with this and find a good theme that

You think that you do not need the Safaricom Mpesa App?
Think again.
Some years ago, to be precise about 10 years ago, if any one
asked you, what is Mpesa? I bet you could have answered by asking, what is
Mpesa?
However, now you cannot do that now.
Mpesa today is a big brand so much that Safaricom end year
results show that it the largest contributor to Safaricom profits. In fact,
there have been talks to split it from its parent company Mpesa.
That is how big Mpesa has become. There are Mpesa shops everywhere.
And if you think that you can do without Mpesa, you lie, for
it has become an integral part of our lives and life without this services is
unimaginable.
We make and receive payments through Mpesa, we send money at
the touch of a button. We do this so often that banks and other financial
institutions are scrabbling for this piece of the cake.
That is why having the Safaricom Mpesa App is necessary.
There no other way I can put it.
How to get the Safaricom Mpesa App.
Now, is there anything like Safaricom Mpesa App? The
straight answer is no. Then why are we even talking about it?
Let me explain.
Safaricom has its own My Safaricom App, this where you get
the Mpesa App.
To get this, you will need to have a smartphone, which nowadays have become very cheap. There are literally hundreds of cheap phones on Jumia or Kilimall you can buy. Some for as little as Ksh. 5000.00
Now on your phone go the google play store app. This app
should be on your phone by default. Now on google play store search for My
Safaricom and download it.
Once done, you will need to register by providing
information such as your name, phone number and national identity number.
If successful, you will have a screen like this.
If go to the main menu, you have a drop menu that looks this
way.
Touching on the Mpesa menu, this comes up.
From here, you can do all your Mpesa transactions. You can
also get mini or full Mpesa statements. Now that is the Safaricom Mpesa App for
you.
Conclusion
With almost every one of us owning a smartphone, having the Safaricom Mpesa App is a necessity. From here, you can do almost all transaction from the touch of a button; all you need is an active internet connection.
If you are not able to do this, you can always do it the traditional the traditional way, by going to sim toolkit and choosing the Mpesa App from here.

Types of bicycles in Kenya
When I was looking for a bicycle at those bicycles shops in Kenya,
I was not just going for structure on two wheels. I was looking for something
that would meet my demands.
When I went shopping, I came across three types of bicycles.
Let us have a look.
1. Mountain Bicycles.
A mountain Bike
As the name suggests, they are mountain climbers. To put it in a more precise way, they are off road biking gadgets.
They have characteristic heavy metal bars and wide tires. If
you go shopping, you realize that they are the cheapest in the market.
2. Road Bike.
A Road Bike
This are made for road cycling. These kind of bicycles are
crafted for speed and are often used in road races.
One notable characteristic about them is that they have drop
handlebars. If you live in a rough terrain, they may not handle that.
3. Hybrid Bicycles.
As the name suggests, it is a combination of the two predecessors
above. This bicycle can handle rough terrain well besides being used as a road
bike.
This is the kind of bicycle I was looking for.
As you visit those bicycle shops in Kenya I have listed
above, this is something you need to have in mind. A bicycle is not just a
bicycle.
Pro Note: Sometimes buying a second hand bicycle can save you lots of money. Besides, most people who know about bicycles will tell you that Ex-UK bicycles are among the best in the Kenyan Market.
Conclusion.
Getting a good bicycle can make you love cycling. Besides, we live in a world where we rarely exercise. Owning a bicycle can keep you fit besides moving you from one point to another. These shops in Kenya will help get a good bicycle.
The bicycles shops in Kenya listed above are among the best
though you may notice that they are all located in Nairobi.
There could be other shops out there that are yet to be discovered. Should you come across such, let me know. I will be glad to add it on this list of bicycle shops in Kenya.
Back to my story
Even though the government went back on its word on banning matatus in the city, I have used my bicycle twice to go to work and it is fun with a bonus of losing some pounds of weight.
My only worry is how to use it in the rainy season!
If you want to know how to top Airtel Credit on your phone, then follow this guide below.
Most of us are used to topping up Safaricom lines and buying
data from Safaricom with ease, however with Airtel; personally, I have been
forced to confirm how exactly it is done.
If Safaricom and Airtel were chicks, then Airtel would be a side ‘chick.’
You should be glad that I sharing these tips with you so that you do not go through the troubles I have gone through.
How to top up Airtel Credit
There are two ways you can do this; by topping up via a scratch card or via Mpesa. Let us have a look.
1.How to top up Airtel scratch via card
This is the most common way most of us top up our Airtel lines. If you happen to buy those red Airtel credit cards, follow the following simple steps.
Scratch your card to reveal the hidden 14-digit number.
On your phone dial *130*XXXXXXXXXXXXX# where the XXXXXXXXXXXX is the secret 14 digit hidden number revealed in the first step.
Hit the call button.
You will receive in a short while a confirmation message that your top up is success. You can also confirm your credit Balance by dialing *133# from your Airtel line.
2. How to top up Airtel via Mpesa
Mpesa wallets on our Safaricom lines is changing the way we are shopping for goods and services. Here is this how to top up Airtel via Mpesa, another way to top up Airtel credit on your phone.
Here are the steps.
Go to the M-pesa Menu
Select Pay Bill
Enter Business No. 220220
Enter Account No. AIRTXXXXXX (Where XXXXXX is your Airtel Mobile number)
Enter the Amount
Enter your M-Pesa PIN then send
I have used this method on several occasions, the down side being that you may have to wait for quite some time before you see the amount reflected in your Airtel credit wallet.
Since
the transaction is being honored through a third party (Pesapal), Mpesa charges
apply.
4. How to top up Airtel via Airtel Money
If you are one of those few who have their Airtel Money Wallets
active, you can also use this option. Here is how.
Go to the Airtel Money Menu
Select Make payments
Select Pay Bill then Other
Under business name enter pesapal
Enter Amount
Enter your Airtel Money
PIN
Under Reference enter AIRTXXXXXX
(Where XXXXXX is your Airtel Mobile number)
Again,
this goes through a third party. I have not used this method; I may not give an
experience about this.
5. How to top up using Credit or Debit Card.
If you have no problem using your Credit or Debit Card, you can top up Airtel Credit at Airtel website at this link.
6. How to top up via Airtel Mobile App
If you have a smartphone, which likely you have, you can buy
through the Airtel Mobile App. If you do not have the app, you can download it
from play store if you are on Android.
Once done downloading, you will need to register your number.
Then follow the following steps.
Go to the ‘Main Menu’
Select “Airtel Money’
Go to ‘Buy Airtime’
Enter your Number or any other recipient.
Enter ‘Amount’
Enter ‘Airtel Money Pin’
Note that this is buying via Airtel Money; however, unlike the second method discussed above, you are not going through a third party.
Conclusion
Airtel has slowly been eating into Safaricom’s share of the voice market. Most of us are having Airtel lines for calling and knowing how to top up Airtel credit is important. From the methods listed above, you can choose one that suits you, though you are likely to go use the traditional method, the first one.
