Airtel 5G Network On, Taking On Safaricom

0

You heard that Safaricom was launching the 5G network in Kenya with an initial launch set for Nairobi and Western Kenya. Now Airtel has announced that it has upgraded some of its sites with the fifth-generation (5G) mobile Internet services.

This move is the latest the company is taking as it ups its war against telecom giant Safaricom, for a share of the business that according to pundits is set to change the way we do things.

According to Airtel, the move would see it capitalize on the rising mobile internet demand in the country, a move that happens after Safaricom announced the same plans.

In an interview with the Business Daily, Airtel Kenya managing director Prasanta Das Sarma said, “These 600 sites are now 5G-ready. We do not have to make any further modifications to the network. We will just get the spectrum and decide when to switch on.”

Airtel is the second-largest mobile company in Kenya and at a 26.5 % stake in the mobile data segment, it seeks to boost its data business. Recently, there has been an uptake of data due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has forced businesses and other work to be done from home.

The Kenyan unit of India’s Bharti Airtel says it has over 600 sites in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Malindi on the 5G network.

700 Megabytes of Speed

The 5G network promised to give its consumers up to 700 megabits per second of internet speed, which is three times what we get on the 4G network. It can download a movie in seconds.

This will be advantageous to businesses and homes not connected to the fiber network. As a result, many more people could work from the comfort of their houses.

Both Safaricom and Airtel are eying the mobile data market as research shows that more Kenyans are connecting to the internet via their smartphones. Safaricom leads the mobile data segment at 67.6%. Apart from Airtel, other players in the mobile data segment are Faiba by Jamii Telkom and Telkom Kenya.

Already Safaricom has launched the 5G network in five counties including Kisumu, Kisii, and Nairobi.  It seeks to expand its high-speed internet to 150 sites in nine urban centers in the next 12 months.

Both Airtel and Safaricom are aiming to rev up their data business to offset sluggish growth in mobile calls, where they are seeing a small revenue growth due to saturation.

Airtel 5G Compatible handsets

To access the 5G network, subscribers will need to acquire new handsets that are compatible with the 5G before they can enjoy the service.

Currently very few Kenyans own the 5G phones, which are expensive. Most of these devices retail from Ksh. 40000.00 while an average smartphone with 4G capabilities in the market cost about Ksh. 15000.00.

The advantage of the 5G is that there will not be network congestion as downloads and upload speeds would ease up the congestion.

“The 5G handsets right now are obviously very costly and see few buys. We feel that a reasonable price will start coming in one and a half to two years,” said Mr. Sarma.

He added, “That is the time we feel we will be able to switch on our 5G network. But if things happen faster, we are ready for it.”

He however said that the company is not in a rush to switch to 5G due to the high cost of smartphones that connect to the network.

Airtel is betting on data and hopes the increased smartphone usage will boost revenues and push up its profitability. Recently, Airtel has been gaining market share in the data segment over Safaricom in recent years.

For instance, Airtel’s subscriber market share on mobile data users jumped to 26.5 percent at the end of December, from 15.7 percent in September of 2017.

The number of mobile data users in Kenya increased to 43.7 million in December from 30.6 million in September 2017, according to the Communications Authority of Kenya.

After opposition leader Raila Odinga, now Uhuru’s brother lost in the 2017 elections, he urged his supporter to boycott Safaricom products a move that helped Airtel gain more numbers.

By launching the Airtel 5G, Airtel Kenya now gives subscribers the option to choose from itself or its biggest rival Safaricom.

Suez Canal Blockage: Why Delivery of Goods from Europe Could Delay.

0

Suez Canal Blockage: Importers have been told to brace for delivery delay of goods from Europe.  This announcement was made by the shipping lines warning the importers in the country would see a delay in the arrival of goods and services from Europe.

This delay has been due to the blockage of the Suez Canal by a giant Japanese container ship called the Ever Given. The Ever Given is a 430-yard ship (400 meters) that is blocking the transit of goods and services on both directions of the Suez Canal, one of the busiest canals in the world that connects Europe, East Africa, and Asia. The canal is a major transit for oil, grain, and other trade items.

The world’s second busiest shipping line, the Mediterranean shipping Line, has warned that it expects to see some missing sailings in the future but denied that it had suspended booking worldwide due to the closure of the Suez Canal.

Other shipping line have also warned of disruption in the supply after more than 230 vessels were reported to have been stranded on both sides of the canal, where the Japanese Ship has been stuck since last Tuesday.

Shippers Council of East Africa Chief Executive Officer Gilbert Lagat said that the blockage would affect the East Africa supply chain. However he noted that the effect would be minimal sine the importation season is at its lowest.

The blockage has also affected importers of commodities such as tea from the port of Mombasa to Europe as most of the product is chipped via the Suez Canal.

Last week, the USA offered to help Egypt to unblock the Suez Canal blockage thereby allowing the flow of vessels within the canal.

The availability of the device that is powered by the Helio processor and runs the Android 10 means that finally the Hot 10 series in the country is now complete.

The Hot 10 series includes the following devices:

  • The Infinix Hot 10 lite that retails at Ksh. 12,000.00 and come with a 2GB, 23GB storage and a 6.78-inch HD+ screen. Moreover, it comes with an Helio A20 processor and a big 5000mAh battery.
  • The second is the Infinix Hot 10. This one comes with 3GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage and a 6.78-inch HD+ display. The processor is a G70 and the battery capped at 5200mAh.
  • Third is the Infinix Hot 10 Play, the device we are talking about, with 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, a 6.82-inch HD+ display, an Helio G35 Processor, and a 6000mAh battery with 10W charging. This one costs Ksh.15499.00.

However, on the downside, the phone downsized the processing power from Helio G70 in the Hot 10 to just half the size with Helio G35. The 10Wcharging is common on all the phones which seems little for the series.

In matters colors, the phone is available in Aegean Blue, Morandi Green, Obsidian Black, or Purple.

To buy one, you can get them at Safaricom shops, Jumia, Xpark, and selected Infinix outlets across the country.

Top 6 Affordable phones You Can Buy in 2021

0

To get an outstanding smartphone, you don’t have to invest a lot. In reality, many of the best budget phones come remarkably close to matching a lot more expensive alternatives. Due to the availability of components at a cheaper rate (contributing to lower mobile prices) while still possessing high-end features these smartphones stand out in an extremely competitive smartphone market.

Although dropping some decent cash on the modern and finest smartphone can be extremely intriguing, our list of the best smartphones worth around $250 can help you save quite a lot of bucks. Our chosen smartphones are reliable and don’t miss out on functionalities.

If your primary concern is a price, you might not find a more concise overview of budget phones anywhere.

So let’s discover the best 6 affordable smartphones that you can buy in 2021;

1.LG Stylo 6(Price around $220$)

For those looking for a cheap smartphone, the LG Stylo 6 is yet another fantastic choice. As you might have inferred from its title, if you would not want to overspend on expensive phones, it carries a stylus and is a good substitute.

The Stylo 6 is fairly common in terms of specifications. It features 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage (upgradable).

It is assisted by a 4,000mAh battery and a MediaTek Helio P35 processor. Inevitably, the stylus is the real game-changer here, enabling you to quickly navigate applications and make fun drawings on the massive 6.8-inch Full HD+ display.

Compared to the previous phones of this series, the camera is a major improvement. And you’ll get the setup of a triple rear camera and a much improved front-facing 13MP camera.

Features:

  • Released 2020, May 20
  • 219g, 8.6mm thickness
  • Android 10
  • 64GB storage, microSDXC
  • Display: 6.8″
  • 3GB RAM
  • Battery capacity: 4000mAh
  • MAIN CAMERA Triple 13 MP
  • SELFIE CAMERA Single 13 MP

2. Realme 7 (Price from $230)

Right now, the Realme 7 is one of the best budget phones around, and it’s pretty good. It looks fantastic, runs smooth, and packs a 90Hz display for an incredibly reasonable price. Given you swing for more RAM than the 4GB main, the 7 provides a powerful output, packed at a reasonable price in an elegant look. The cameras are good too although not excellent, there isn’t much to worry about this further than that.

Features:

  • Released 2020, October 21
  • 196.5g, 9.4mm thickness
  • Android 10, Realme UI
  • 64GB/128GB storage, microSDXC
  • Display size: 6.5″
  • 4-8GB RAM
  • Battery capacity: 5000mAh
  • MAIN CAMERA Quad 48 MP
  • SELFIE CAMERA Single 16 MP

3. Nokia 5.3 (Price: $200)

For any smartphone that starts at $200 you need to minimize your hopes, but that is when the sneaks into surprise. In this, you have NFC so that you can pay with an application like Google Pay at target stores. HMD guarantees two years of Android version upgrades and also three years of regular security updates. That kind of software support on the phone is rarely inexpensive.

Features:

  • Released 2020, April 02
  • 185g, 8.5mm thickness
  • Android 10, Android One
  • 64GB storage, microSDXC
  • Display size: 6.55″
  • 3-6GB RAM
  • Battery Capacity: 4000mAh
  • MAIN CAMERA Quad 13 MP
  • SELFIE CAMERA Single 8 MP

4. Motorola Moto E6s  (Price: $159)

The Motorola Moto E6s

If you realize how inexpensive the Moto E6s are, it’s impossible not to be amazed by all you get. Considering what the specifications tell you, a field of cheap phones that often cut costs is a performance that in this phone is shockingly great. Although the unique design does a decent job of mimicking more expensive phones, Motorola provided the best possible specs in this powerful handset.

The cameras are a little walloped, but you will be happily surprised if you are determined to be patient. There are sacrifices scattered in the Moto E6s, but these are amazingly easy to overlook for what you pay.

Features:

  • Released 2020, April 27
  • 160g, 8.5mm thickness
  • Android 9.0
  • 32GB/64GB storage, microSDXC
  • Display size: 6.1″
  • 2/4GB RAM
  • Battery capacity: 3000mAh
  • MAIN CAMERA Dual 13 MP
  • SELFIE CAMERA Single 5 MP

5. Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 $179.99 (3GB/64GB)

The Redmi Note 9 is a decent smartphone if you’re on a strict budget. It ticks a lot of boxes and you can’t disagree with the benefit it gives, though it’s not perfect.

It is well built (although it has plastic covering), not to forget it comes with interesting and useful characteristics, such as a quad-lens camera that typically perform well, except for missing some intricate details. For regular users there are still enough functionalities, we hope for good output from the huge 5020mAh battery life.

Features:

  • Released 2020, May 12
  • 199g, 8.9mm thickness
  • Android 10, MIUI 12
  • 64GB/128GB storage, microSDXC
  • Display size: 6.53″
  • 3-6GB RAM
  • Battery Capacity: 5020mAh
  • MAIN CAMERA Quad 48 MP
  • SELFIE CAMERA Single 13 MP

6. Samsung Galaxy M31 (price around 250$)

The Galaxy M31-one of the top 6 affordable phones to buy in 2021, still offers you a splendid Full HD OLED display whilst popping in at the optimum point of our ‘budget phone’ concept, but it does not compromise with its fine selection of cameras and, maybe most amazingly of all, a gigantic 6000mAh battery.

The performance of Samsung should also be praised for its rich set of features and convenient usability. While the major points keeping it back from becoming truly outstanding is its little frizzy performance and a stale design.

Features:

  • Released 2020, March 05
  • 191g, 8.9mm thickness
  • Android 10, up to Android 11, One UI 3.0
  • 64GB/128GB storage, microSDXC
  • Display size: 6.4″
  • 6/8GB RAM
  • Battery capacity: 6000mAh
  • MAIN CAMERA Triple 64 MP
  • SELFIE CAMERA Single 32 MP

In 2021, the choice of cheap phones is very large, and you can choose from a rising number of inexpensive smartphones. In recent years, inexpensive phones have come a very long way, many affordable smartphones have better cameras than just a few years ago’s best smartphones. Heavy rivalry in the market for budget phones means companies have stepped up their game to produce great cheap phones that don’t cut any major corners.

STARTIMES TV EYES SUSTAINED SUBSCRIBER GROWTH WITH NEW DECODER PRICE

0

Nairobi 15th February 2021: Pay Television Company StarTimes TV has today announced a price reduction of up to 33% targeting new subscribers acquiring the company’s type approved set top boxes. The price drop is expected to enable more Kenyans access and enjoy quality digital television programming, further growing the company’s market share.

The StarTimes Pay Television terrestrial Digital Box will now be retailing at KSH. 999 from KSH. 1,499 representing a 33% price drop, while the satellite full kit that includes a dish, decoder, 10 metre cable and accessories will retail at KSH 2,699 down from KSH. 2,999 representing a 10% price drop. The new prices take effect immediately and will be available at the company’s retail shops, supermarkets and distributors across the country.

To complement the offer, StarTimes TV will extend one-month free access to the top bouquet for the new terrestrial and satellite platform subscribers with access to over 100 local and international channels across diverse content genres including sports, documentaries, telenovelas, kids, music among others.

Speaking when he unveiled the new campaign, StarTimes Regional Marketing Director Mr. Aldrine Nsubuga observed that the company has made great strides towards ensuring the initial cost of device acquisition is affordable to majority of Kenyans as it seeks to achieve its goal of ensuring majority of households have access to digital television.

“We are impressed by the headway we have made so far in making it possible for Kenyans to access digital television be they in urban or rural areas. The move to extend a price reduction for our set top boxes is therefore continuity in this effort as we seek to make it more affordable to not only acquire but also access our premium television content,” noted Mr. Nsubuga.

The decoders have an advanced user friendly interface including multi-lingual support with options for English, Kiswahili, French and Portuguese making it possible for customers to use a language that is convenient to them and can equally set the parental control to block preferred channels that have parental advisory.

The company has progressively looked to offer the most affordable pay television service in the country through affordable devices and monthly subscriptions coupled with a rich range of content genres with the key highlight being the recent acquisition of the broadcast of the Kenya Premier League as well as the exclusive broadcast of Europa League, FA Cup, Bundesliga, La Liga as well as an array of Telenovelas, drama, kids, documentaries, music and lifestyle content.

“We continue to also establish ways to grow our subscriber value through giving subscribers a taste of our premium programming, which explains the one month offer where new subscribers will enjoy access to over 100 local and international channels at no extra cost upon acquiring either the terrestrial decoder or the satellite full kit,” concluded Mr. Nsubuga.

In a statement, the company said that it is going to double the speeds for the same price as the current plans from March 1st, 2021.

The statement read:

Safaricom PLC has permanently adjusted the bandwidth for its Home Fibre customers, extending the offer given when the Covid-19 pandemic started nearly a year ago.

The decision effectively means that Home Fibre customers will get about double the bandwidth they have paid for, while Diamond Package customers will get more than double the speed at 250%.

The company provides home fibre solutions to homes a venture they begun in 2017 and are currently doing very well.

Safaricom Adds Forward Travelers To Simple Fare, An M-Pesa Payment System

0

Safaricom has said that it has collaborated with Forward Travelers to offer M-pesa fare collection for Matatu users in Kenya through Simple Fare.

According to Safaricom, the service will see Forward Travelers, a Sacco that operates on Kangundo Road, Juja Road, and other destinations in East lands immediately. The service will then roll out to over 400 Matatus plying the Kayole-City Center Route.

Speaking during the launch of the service, Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom’s CEO said, “M-PESA is increasingly becoming a preferred way to pay and collect fare for commuters and matatus. It has therefore become necessary to partner with the matatu sector to provide them with solutions that make it easy to collect and reconcile payments empowering them to efficiently run their businesses.”

This comes at a time when the Ministry of Transport and The Nairobi Metropolitan Service are working together to reign on the Matatu industry that has been accused of various crimes.

The service dubbed Simple Fare, allows Matatu owners to see that daily fare collected and the amount can be withdrawn via their M-pesa account. The service will be run on mobile phones and an online portal.

This will be a relief to many commuters as many conductors have been accused of robbing their clients dry.

“In addition to supporting the fight against the pandemic, this platform facilitates seamless interactions across the ecosystem. It greatly boosts the Matatu owners’ efforts of tracking their investments, while the SACCO can monitor their members’ activities. Such is the value that can be unlocked by embracing technological advancements. It is the future,” added Ephantus Thuku, CEO of Netcen.

This deal now brings to over 450 the number of public service vehicles that now accept payment of fares through M-PESA. Already, the service is available on more than 300 City Shuttle vehicles in Nairobi.

Simple Fare, a mobile and financial integration technology developed by Netcen Interactives, powers the service. It enables a commuter to pay the fare through Lipa Na M-PESA with the payment immediately reflecting in the bus crew’s phones.
