MaishahNEWSYesterday9 Views

Kenya Railways has announced an extra Madaraka Express passenger train service to cater for the high travel demand on Friday, November 14, and Saturday, November 15, 2025.

This strategic move is aimed at easing passenger congestion along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) route, especially as holidaymakers and business travelers seek comfortable and efficient intercity transport options.

Details of the Additional Service

The newly scheduled Madaraka Express trains will operate as follows:

  • Friday, November 14, 2025:
An extra train will depart from Mombasa at 09:45 AM, stopping at Voi at 11:21 AM, departing by 11:26 AM, and arriving in Nairobi at 3:48 PM.
  • Saturday, November 15, 2025:
The additional train will leave Nairobi at 09:45 AM, reach Voi by 1:35 PM, depart Voi at 1:40 PM, and conclude its trip in Mombasa at 3:36 PM.

These schedules have been introduced to accommodate the increased passenger demand and help Kenyans travel seamlessly across the major transport corridor.

Booking and Ticketing Information

Passengers can conveniently book tickets for these additional Madaraka Express services through three channels:

Tickets can be purchased up to 60 days in advance, and the system supports bookings for up to 10 passengers per transaction.

Passengers are advised to arrive at the station at least one hour before departure, as boarding closes 11 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

Passenger Guidelines and Fare Information

To ensure safety and compliance:

  • Passengers must present a valid ID during ticket purchase and boarding.
  • Children under 3 years travel free, those aged 3-11 pay half fare (only one child per adult qualifies for half fare, others pay full fare).
  • Alcoholic drinks and pets are strictly prohibited on board and within stations.
  • Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours before travel (30% fee applies); rescheduling is allowed once (for a 10% fee), subject to seat availability.
  • Lost tickets can be reissued after verification, with a 30% fee.

Why the Extra Service Matters

The Nairobi-Mombasa SGR has become the backbone of intercity travel since its inception. Kenya Railways is responding to a surge in demand, especially during peak periods when premium-class tickets are booked out months in advance.

By adding extra trains, Kenya Railways affirms its commitment to customer convenience and adapting to Kenya’s growing travel needs.

  • Book early due to high demand and anticipated full trains.
  • Always carry your original identification documents for verification.
  • Arrive at the station well ahead of departure to avoid missing your train.
