Airtel and Telkom Kenya Drop Their Merger Plans

0

Airtel Kenya and Telkom Kenya have announced that they have dropped the much-publicized merger talks, which have been taking place for some. This may come as a relief to the industry leader Safaricom that opposed it and saw it as a threat to its dominance in the Kenyan Market.

While releasing the joint statement, the Telcos said, “After carefully reviewing the available options, Telkom has opted to adopt an alternative strategic direction and will no longer be pursuing the proposed joint venture transaction. This decision has been mutually agreed with Airtel Networks Kenya Limited.”

“Our confidence in Telkom’s new direction is further bolstered by the accelerated digital transformation brought about by the recent dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has made both businesses as well individuals, acutely aware of the need to review direction, with respect to how we do things, and the need to step-up. This accelerated digital transformation is particularly important within the telecommunications sector, owing to an increased demand for data and broadband,” said Telkom Kenya in a statement.

Telkom said that they have seen new opportunities brought in by the Covid-19 pandemic and as such, they are looking at these opportunities to expand their operations.

Telkom Kenya says that the merger plans were made difficult by the fact that documentation needed for approvals was not forthcoming.

Following this development, the redundancy notice issued by issued by the company on 31st July 2019 has been withdrawn with immediate effect and the earlier envisaged redundancies no longer apply. At least 220 employees who were staring at job losses have been given a lifeline.

The competition Authority of Kenya had approved the merger in December 2019 after some initial challenges to the merger. Among the initial hiccups was investigation by the EACC.

Telkom Kenya now says that it is focusing on strengthening its infrastructure asset base and services as it seeks to cement its position in the digital space.

Should the merger have succeed, it would have left hundreds with job loses even as the COVID-19 continues to ravage the country. The merger would also have brought up a Telco that would take on Safaricom’s dominance of the Kenya market.

Nokia C3 Relaunches With Fingerprint Sensor

0

HMD Global has relaunched the Nokia C3 by adding a fingerprint sensor for its users in the market.

If you do not know, HMD Global is the company that has been bringing Nokia devices to us. Devices that were once the envy of other brands but somehow went under but are now being revived. Nokia tried windows but it did not go down well, now, they are launching devices running the android software.

We have seen the C1 phones, which were then followed by the C2 phones that are now being replaced by the C3.

And this is exactly what HMD Global is doing by relaunching the Nokia C3 with a fingerprint sensor. Remember sometime back, HMD released the Nokia C3 without a fingerprint scanner.

Specifications

So what does the Nokia C3 bring on the table? For starters, personally I begin by looking at the screen size. I am someone who loves big screens.  The C3 packs a 5.99-inch HD+ resolution screen, which is not bad considering that HMD Global rarely produces devices that are more than 6 inches.

For RAM, the device is a 3GB and for internal memory, you get 32GB, which is not big but not too bad at the same time. However, do not worry; you can expand the storage by use of a microSD card.

The C3 runs Android 10 out of the box, and powered by a quad-core CPU running at 1.6 GHz.

Having a look at the cameras reveal an 8MP main camera and if you love taking selfies, then the 5MP front camera is all you have. Considering that this is a budget phone, this is expected.

The battery is a 3040mAh, which should juice up your day but honestly, HMD Global has not been doing the batteries any justice.

Lastly is the fingerprint scanner an addition to this device. If you looking to buy this device, it will cost you some Ksh.9,499.00.

This is a list of the largest oil producers in Africa, countries that were lucky to strike the black liquid within their boundaries.

Oil is what drives our manufacturing, transport, agricultural, and other important sectors of our economy. Indeed, fluctuations in oil prices cause tensions and send shivers all around the world.

So which are the largest oil producers in Africa? Here below is a complete list of countries that can stand up among other world countries and boast to be contributing to the production of the black gold to the market.

  • Nigeria
  • Libya
  • Angola
  • Egypt
  • Algeria

These 5 countries rank among the top 30 oil producing countries of the world. Let us look at each of them closer

Top 5 Largest Oil Producers in Africa

5.Egypt

The land of the Pharaohs is among the largest oil producers in Africa. As of 2019, the country steadily produced 630 thousand barrels a day.

Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), a state-owned oil company has been the force behind the oil production in the country.  The company collaborates with several international oil companies in offshore and onshore production operations in Egypt.

To boost its oil production, the Egyptian government has worked to make the country more attractive to foreign investment. These reforms include reducing subsidies to EGPC and reducing the number of payments in arrears to international oil companies.

4. Libya

Libya has always been in the news for the wrong reasons, which revolve around the wars fought to take control of the country. However, behind these wars is the country’s oil industry. Libya, in 2019 produced 1.2 million barrels of oil, making it one of the top five producers of oil in Africa.

While Nigeria has the second-largest proven oil reserves in Africa, Libya is known to have the largest proven oil reserves. However, since the topping of its strongman Gaddaffi the former president, Libya has not been able to fully exploit its potential.

Libya oil reserves continue to fuel wars between the government and militias who are constantly at war, therefore cutting on production.

3. Algeria

Algeria is the 3rd largest oil producer in Africa producing 1.3 million barrels a day as of 2019. Due to controls by OPEC, this production has dropped from about 1.7 million barrels as the organizations seeks to control the oil prices.

Entreprise Nationale Sonatrach is Algeria’s state-owned oil and gas company, which continues to dominate the oil industry in Algeria.

Most of the oil produced from Algeria is exported to markets in Europe, which is in its proximity. BP, Total, and Exxon Mobile are the major international companies that operate in Algeria.

2. Angola

Sandwiched between DRC, Namibia, and Zambia is Angola. As of 2019, Angola produced 1.4 million barrels of oil. This was, however, a decline from 1.8 million the country had been producing by the year 2015.

Angola has both offshore and onshore oil wells that produce the countries’ millions of barrels, however, with the price of dropping, production had been reduced as agreed by OPEC ( Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries ) an organization that Angola is a member.

Several significant international oil companies that operate in Angola include BP, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Total, Statoil, Eni, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation, also known as CNOOC.

Agência Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos e Biocombustìveis (ANHB) is a new independent regulatory organization that currently controls the oil industry in Angola.

1. Nigeria

Nigeria is not only the most populous country on the continent but also the largest producer of oil in Africa. In 2019, Nigeria produced 2.1 million barrels per day making it among the top ten oil producers in the world.

According to the U.S Energy Information Administration, Nigeria has the second-largest known oil reserve in Africa. However, security issues and other business risks in the country have made it difficult for continued oil exploration.

This means that the country has a potential, to produce more oil if the issues highlighted above are solved. Though it is the largest economy on the African continent, corruption and high populations means that most people are still poor and have not yet tasted the fruits of living above Africa’s largest oil deposits.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), a state-owned corporation, is responsible for regulating the oil and gas sector in the country. Oil multinational companies such as Shell, Total, Eni, Exxon, Mobil, and Chevron operate in the country.

Other Oil Producing Countries In Africa

Though the countries above are the largest producers of oil Africa, they are other countries that produce substantial oil.

Other oil producers in Africa are

  • Sudan
  • South Sudan
  • Congo
  • Democratic Republic  of Congo
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Gabon
  • Cameroon
  • Ghana

Conclusion

Several countries in Africa continue prospection oil within their boundaries in hope of striking it rich. However, until they do so, the five countries above remain the largest oil producers in Africa.
