StarTimes, UNESCO in Joint Campaign Against Dis- and Mis-Information on COVID-19

Nairobi, 30th July 2020. UNESCO, the UN Agency saddled with the promotion of freedom of expression and access to information aims to empower the society, with increased capacities of resilience in the face of “fake news” including dis- and mis-information that preceded the COVID 19 pandemic.

UNESCO’s launch of the campaign under Media and Information is designed to encourage young men and women to identify and leverage their creativity and innovation to combat mis- and disinformation on COVID-19.

In support of the campaign, StarTimes Media has leveraged on its online presence calling for increased attention and participation across its over 10 million followers. To further promote the best works of the campaign, access to the Top 10 winners’ videos is now available on StarTimes ON, the streaming video APP used by over 20 million users across Africa.

“To join the campaign against fake news on COVID-19 is part of the long term collaboration with UNESCO, we hope to further contribute to the local cultural development in near future. While Nigeria has the second-largest proven oil reserves in Africa, Libya is known to have the largest proven oil reserves. However, since the topping of its strongman Gaddaffi the former president, Libya has not been able to fully exploit its potential.

Libya oil reserves continue to fuel wars between the government and militias who are constantly at war, therefore cutting on production.

3. Algeria

Algeria is the 3rd largest oil producer in Africa producing 1.3 million barrels a day as of 2019. Due to controls by OPEC, this production has dropped from about 1.7 million barrels as the organizations seeks to control the oil prices.

Entreprise Nationale Sonatrach is Algeria’s state-owned oil and gas company, which continues to dominate the oil industry in Algeria.

Most of the oil produced from Algeria is exported to markets in Europe, which is in its proximity. BP, Total, and Exxon Mobile are the major international companies that operate in Algeria.

2. Angola

Sandwiched between DRC, Namibia, and Zambia is Angola. As of 2019, Angola produced 1.4 million barrels of oil. This was, however, a decline from 1.8 million the country had been producing by the year 2015.

Angola has both offshore and onshore oil wells that produce the countries’ millions of barrels, however, with the price of dropping, production had been reduced as agreed by OPEC ( Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries ) an organization that Angola is a member.

Several significant international oil companies that operate in Angola include BP, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Total, Statoil, Eni, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation, also known as CNOOC.

Agência Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos e Biocombustìveis (ANHB) is a new independent regulatory organization that currently controls the oil industry in Angola.

According to the U.S Energy Information Administration, Nigeria has the second-largest known oil reserve in Africa. However, security issues and other business risks in the country have made it difficult for continued oil exploration.

This means that the country has a potential, to produce more oil if the issues highlighted above are solved. Though it is the largest economy on the African continent, corruption and high populations means that most people are still poor and have not yet tasted the fruits of living above Africa’s largest oil deposits.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), a state-owned corporation, is responsible for regulating the oil and gas sector in the country. Oil multinational companies such as Shell, Total, Eni, Exxon, Mobil, and Chevron operate in the country.

Kodak to manufacture drugs: Kodak a company that most of us known to produce cameras and films in the past has now shifted the focus on manufacturing drugs.

The Company, otherwise called Eastman Kodak, and which for years dominated the camera and film industry until technology pushed them out of business, has found a new venture.  

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, Kodak has bounced back and this time, not producing cameras but manufacturing drugs. This is after the company secured a 765 million dollars loan that will be used to manufacture drugs.

The more will create as many as 350 jobs in this new business venture and production is expected to top in the next 5 years where it is expected that it will account for 25% of all non-biologic, non-antibacterial generic pharmaceuticals.

The companies’ drug operation will be based on their existing Specialty Chemicals Group which is used for pharmaceuticals, industrial specialties, personal care, electronics, agrochemicals, graphics security and emerging energy technologies.

According to Jim Contineza, Kodak’s Chairman and CEO, the company expects the pharmaceutical ingredients to make up 30% to 40% of Kodak’s business over time, which could bring in the much need revenue.

The loan obtained by Kodak is of its kind under the US Defense Production Act, even as more pharmaceutical companies race against time to find a cure or vaccine for COVID-19.

Kodak’s venture into manufacturing drugs is no surprise given that many companies are struggling to stay afloat during this period.
