More than 38,314 former university students in the country have defaulted on their HELB(Higher Education Loans Board) loans in the 10 months from February 2020 due to the effects of COVID-19 that resulted in mass layoffs, closure of businesses, and freeze of hiring.

This number now brings the total defaulters to 116,642 from 78,328 recorded in December of 2019, according to data presented to parliament on Wednesday.

This means that more than Ksh. 11.3 billion is in default out of Ksh 45.5 billion given to students in loans, giving HELB a non-performing ratio of 24.8% way above the average 13.6%.

According to HELB CEO Charles Ringera, “The total mature outstanding debt is Sh45.5 billion held by 323,666 loanees out of which 207,024 are currently repaying their loans worth Sh34.2 billion.”

This development highlights the struggles former students are facing due to the effects of COVID-19 for those in formal employment or doing business.

The country was in partial, lockdown for several months after the first case of COVID-19 was recorded in the country.

For the first time in 12 years, the country’s economy has shrunk resulting in more than 1.72 jobs lost directly or indirectly.

However, the agency said that it was pursuing more than 78,328 defaulters holding some Ksh. 7.7billion.

He said the Government is proud to count the church as a steadfast partner in national development especially in sharing the vision of a better and prosperous Kenya for all.

“Since the dawn of our Republic, the Church in Kenya has played a pivotal role in our national life. Beyond nourishing the soul and the spirit through spreading the Gospel, the Church has followed in the footsteps of Christ by establishing schools, hospitals, feeding centres, and community-support programmes,” President Kenyatta said.

On the ongoing rollout of the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC), the President said the Ministry of Education will continue working closely with all universities to ensure that they produce competent educators to drive the reform process.

He told universities to start preparing themselves to receive and teach form four graduates under the new curriculum saying their readiness is what will ensure the success of the country.

The Head of State commended the university for its reputation of offering holistic training that produces not only competent graduands, but, more importantly, virtuous men and women.

“Today, I want to challenge you to keep this tradition going, and to create even more opportunities for your students to engage in programmes that will address issues in the communities surrounding the institution; even as you train them to be leaders in their various fields of study,” the President said.

He recalled the work done by PCEA in the education sector since 1892 when it started the first school in Kibwezi, pointing out that the church’s commitment to public life in Kenya and East Africa region has continued to inspire hope and enhanced possibilities for the citizens.

“The Presbyterian Church in East Africa can trace its support for education in Kenya all the way back to the first school opened by Dr James Stewart in 1892 at Kibwezi.“One Hundred and Twenty Eight Years later, the Presbyterian church’s commitment to public life in Kenya and East Africa is stronger than ever; with thousands of PCEA schools, mission hospitals and institutions of good works, dotting our landscape,” President Kenyatta said.

By doing so the Church is similarly ready to join hands with the Government to improve the lives of Kenyans through quality education,” Rev Mwamba said.

Education CS Prof George Magoha who also spoke at the award ceremony applauded the PCEA church for being at the forefront in championing quality education since its entry into the country.

Reviews

As always, I share reviews from real customers who have used the buses for you to get a glimpse of what you are getting you into.

Mwaghesha Mkala says:

“Your 9PM bus from Mombasa on Sunday (9/9/2018) was being driven very fast and carelessly, and could have caused numerous accidents between Mombasa and Mtito Andei. It was KCE 151 if I’m not wrong, and the passengers raised complaints a number of times. The driver should not be allowed on the road if he is in a hurry to get somewhere, he should drive alone.

Very disappointed with the experience!”

Fatmzahra Luqman Jamardin Says:

“MIMI hata nkikosa gari SKU nyingine siwezi panda gari zenyu…useless company….yesterday i suffered the whole night….gari ya SAA NNE usiku ikaharibikia kwa njia tukashukishwa tunaekwa kwa tahmeed na imejaa ikabidi tumekaa kwa floor…yaani nashuka Nairobi asubuhi nakaa kama nlikuwa nakimbizana na nyoka mstuni nimejaa mchanga….mtafilisika tu….nlitaka kuwashtaki mnirudishie doh zangu but nimewaachia mungu….rubbish…mazaga za gari….am very disappointed…nkt..”

Lastly Samuel Ngiri Nginya Says:

“Disappointed. My name is Samuel, tel. 0722787537. Booked a Randa coach online booking ticket on Saturday 10th March, for travel date of Sunday 11th March 10pm. Seat no 9. I booked so early coz I was not feeling well. Mpesa Ref :MCA476CG9E. The bus Reg.NO  KCE151Z. I was boarding from Miritini stage. When the bus came the conductor who was very rude had sold my seat, and rudely told me to take the back seat or I go to their office to complain. It was then heading to 11 pm, so my options were limited but to take that back seat. People of Kenya where did Justice go? Why then was I booking more than 24 hours in advance? The conductor’s mobile no is 0713317378. I am calling all Kenyans of goodwill to come and help me get these answers from this company. Why did they discriminate against me? What criteria did they use for discrimination? IAM Demanding a non-conditional apology & compensation for damages, otherwise, this issue will not rest there.”

In writing these articles, in no way do we endorse these companies. We provide you with the information as it is for you to decide.

I only got negative reviews. Maybe people who are happy with their services do not complain.

Looking for other options on this route? Why not consider

Non-Performing Loans Rise As More Kenyans Risk Being Listed on CBR.

0

Non-performing Loans: Thousands of Kenyans risk being listed on CBR (credit reference bureaus) for defaulting on loan payments amounting to billions of shillings.

According to CBK, Kenyans had defaulted on loans amounting to Ksh 404 billion from October 2019.

This means that the number of defaults had risen by Ksh. 55.9 billion from Ksh 349.9 billion from the period ending February. On the same note, since the first case of coronavirus was recorded, Kenyans had defaulted on bank loans worth Ksh. 53.95 billion.

According to Patrick Njoroge, CBK Governor, “Non-performing loans (NPLs) increases were noted in the transport and communication, energy and water, tourism, restaurants and hotels and real estate sectors, mainly due to disruptions of the businesses. The increases in NPLs were partially offset by repayments and recoveries in the trade, manufacturing, building and construction sectors.”

By April of 2020, the number of Kenyans that had been listed on CBR as defaulters had hit 3.2 million from 2.7 million who were on the list last year. This represented a 12% increase for non-performing loans up from 9.5%.

Most of the defaulters are borrowers on Mobile lending Apps. Over 400 thousand of the 2.7 million had defaulted on Ksh.200.00 and below. Ironically, the CBK had banned Mobile Lending from blacklisting borrowers.

The latest data from CBK ( Central Bank of Kenya) these small lenders will borrow loans from one app to pay another loan in a different app.

This often traps the borrowers in a cycle of debt.
