StarTimes Set To Play a Pivotal Role in Local Content Development in Kenya

0

Nairobi, 20th May 2021. Pay Television Company StarTimes Media is set to play a significant role in the development of local content in the country with the planned progressive roll out of exclusive productions that continue to feature on the subscriber platforms online application StarTimes ON and the local content self-produced channel, Rembo TV.

Speaking during this year’s virtual ICT week organized by Communication Authority of Kenya, StarTimes Kenya Content Director Mr. Myke Mugo noted the company is increasingly involved in the on-going conversation on Kenyan content making waves on the new digital spaces and how best to monetize the content on new platforms including over the top technology in the country and beyond.

“Kenya is progressively producing great content buoyed by technically astute and talented producers. Great opportunity thereby lies in identifying a unifying thread that will make our Kenyan content immediately recognizable and curves a niche market for itself in the face of competition from more established Nigerian, Mexican, Tanzanian, Chinese and American content that is readily available across various platforms,” noted Mr. Mugo.

The Authority annually holds the ICT week as part of activities to celebrate the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day (WTISD) which is marked annually on 17th May to commemorate the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

ICT week brings together ICT experts, government leaders, ICT service providers, ICT entrepreneurs, start-ups and consumers to discuss various issues pertinent to the ICT industry where it is equally a platform where the Authority creates awareness on its mandate while increasing compliance with licensee conditions and enhancing quality of service provided to consumers.

This year’s theme provided by ITU was ‘Accelerating Digital Transformation in Challenging Times’, where the Authority localized the same for national celebrations to ‘Powering a Digitally Transformed Nation’ which gelled well with the Authority’s 20th Anniversary celebrations.

The celebrations took place in a virtual format in compliance with the continued containment measures to slow the spread on Covid-19 in the country and featured various forums including ways to harness the potential of new frontiers, the future of ICT, broadcasting, postal and courier sectors in Kenya.

Data shows that a majority of Kenyans, nearly half or 45.98 percent of the 2.93 million formal workers captured in the KRA database earned below KSh30, 000.00, underlining the problem of Kenya’s pay inequality.

Nevertheless, earning less than Ksh.100, 000.00 does not mean that you dreams are not valid. Like everybody else, your dreams a valid and you can take steps to own a car.

One thing that most of are not aware of is that, owning a car comes with its own costs. These costs include and not limited to fuel cost, depreciation, regular visits to the mechanic, and insurance. Talking of insurance, the more costly your car is the higher insurance premiums it attracts.

It is also a common secret that expensive cars consume more fuel hence the term fuel guzzlers. That is one more reason is why looking for the best cars under 1 million makes sense for all of us.

Come to think of it, of you earn less than Ksh. 100,000.00, you cannot afford to fuel that cost about Ksh.5000.00, that is why cheap cars will be the best for you.

Telkom Kenya Customers To Freely Send Money To All Networks Via T-Kash

0

Telkom Kenya customers will now be able to send money to customers across all networks, thanks to its innovative digital financial services platform T-Kash at no cost for the next 60 days. Moreover, customers will get an extra 25% worth of bonus airtime when they purchase airtime via T-kash during the same period.

Telkom Kenya also said that customers would also be rewarded with data when they use T-Kash to pay their bills. Common monthly payments are those that customers pay to Kenya Power, Nairobi Water, Land rates for various counties, and pay-tv subscriptions such as DSTV, Star times, and GOTV. These customers will also benefit.

The company is seeking to tap into the mobile money payments systems that have been on the rise since the first case of COVID-19 was first reported in the country in March 2020.

Because of this, digital wallets have gained acceptance as an alternative to cash, therefore, promoting safer communities and more efficient commercial interactions.

“COVID-19 has brought with it heightened cost sensitivities with the discerning customer looking for more value at the best possible price. What T-Kash is offering the customer for the next 60 days is a platform that takes away the stress of having to constantly make calculations of how much extra money you will need to successfully make a transaction, in this particular case, sending money,” said Telkom’s Chief Executive Officer, Mugo KIBATI. Adding that the technology company is alive to the need for a convenient and secure financial services platform that enables customers to easily send money across networks.

“We have been collating feedback from our customers that has informed the immediate next steps, with respect to the desired T-Kash customer experience: simplicity, affordability, and availability,” noted the CEO.

He further said that, Telkom’s Digital Financial Services function is now focused on strategic and deliberate partnerships for impact, in line with our brand is over-arching focus areas. Our partnership with the NYCK is a clear indicator that more can be done to advance the financial inclusion of our youth. Further digitization and investment in the mobile money ecosystem will help address a crisis that has been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We saw the company partner with the Ministry of ICT’s National Youth Council of Kenya (NYCK), to co-create FURSA, an e-wallet that will open up a portfolio of financial opportunities to the youth in Kenya and more so at the grassroots levels.

The aim of this platform was to increase the youth resilience in the midst of physical and infrastructural barriers that hinder access to financial services and products.

To sign up for these offers, one needs to register at authorized agents countrywide for T-Kash. Once signed up, the T-Kash menu can be accessed through USSD by dialing *160# or via DSTK.

Telkom Kenya’s T-Kash is seeking more from the mobile money revolution in Kenya where its immediate competitors are Airtel’s Airtel Money and Safaricom’s Mpesa with the latter being the markets leading mobile money transfer service.

To begin us of, Kowino KASILA say, I have traveled with Periska Premium during this festive season and I must surely commend them for their beautiful services, which I should not be made to believe that is so because they are Johnny-come-lately into the transport arena. Fares are fair, drivers are competent

Perhaps what you should endeavor to improve on is your digital marketing strategy to bring more passengers on board. Thanks

Kwanya Joshua Nyakwar Omenda says, “If you want beauty in Buses, then Periska Luxurious is the go to.I promised to try Easy Coach when the country is open. I did over the weekend. I must admit Easy Coach are top there.

I am trying Periska next to Kisumu. Anyway, I also just want to show you my photography skills and my love for buses. More will follow”.

Lastly, Angel Keysha says, “Periska I’m so much disappointed in you. Booked your bus from Nairobi to Busia, on reaching Kericho your driver alighted and went for stories with one of your inspectors without proper explanation of what is going on, for one full hour. Poor services

From the reviews, it seems that Periska Bus has mostly positive reviews form the few people that have been able to post on its Facebook page.

Conclusion

If you traveling to Western Kenya, Periska Bus is among the many bus companies, you may need to consider. If you are not happy, you can also try Easy Coach, Modern Coast, or shuttles operating on the routes.

Kenya’s Avocados Fetch Ksh. 4.26 Billion In The International Market

0

Kenya’s Avocados: Kenya exported avocados valued at Ksh. 4.26 billion in the first quarter of the year 2021 compared to the same period last year. This is according to data obtained from Horticulture Directorate by ShopaXo.

Buoyed by improved demand, in the global markets, this represented a 93% jump in the exports. The country produces 26,481 tonnes of avocadoes between January and March this year compared to 15,101 tonnes produced during the same period last year.

The jump is attributed to the resumption of export of the popular Fuerte variety on February 15 followed by Hass on March 8 after close to a four-month ban. The Directorate of Horticulture had imposed the ban after the theft of the immature fruit last year.

In what seemed to be a coordinated scheme, cartels stole the fruit and sold it to the international market where the demand for avocadoes continues to remain high. As a result, the Directorate of Horticulture banned the two varieties for export.

Usually, the season of these varieties usually comes to an end at that time pushing in the shortage of the commodity the result being high demand not only in the local market but also globally.

Most of Kenya’s Avocadoes are sold to Europe, Middle East, and Asia as few get into the Chinese market.

More Money

The good money farmers are making on avocadoes has seen farmers abandon crops like coffee, tea, and miraa to cultivate them amid rising demand for the commodity in the international market.

Most of Kenya’s avocadoes are cultivated in the Central, Rift Valley, and Western regions of the country. The Horticulture Directorate Noted,  “There has been an increase in area under cultivation and a shift from the traditional avocado growing zones to the Rift Valley and parts of western Kenya.

Kenya’s avocado exports jumped 15 percent to 68,000 metric tonnes in the last year to October 2020, fetching the country Ksh.14 billion and becoming a foreign currency earner.

Kenya is the 8th largest producer in the world. Other large producers are Brazil, Peru, Indonesia, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. Mexico is the world’s largest producer.

Kenya leads Africa in Avocado production, while South Africa and Malawi come in second and third respectively.

Revealed: JSC Sitting Allowance For Hiring Of CJ.

0

JSC Sitting Allowance: The Judicial Service Commission (JSC), the commission that is responsible for hiring judicial officials, has over the last week been conducting interviews to fill the position of Kenya’s next Chief Justice(CJ).

The position was left vacant after the former Chief Justice Maranga, attained the retirement age and therefore left the service.

Over the last week, Kenyans have been able to follow the proceeding on TV and already according to many, there already front runners.

However, late last week, the commission received an order to stop the proceeding after one Kenyan went to court to question the proceedings. The commission responded by filing an appeal at the court of appeal.

JSC Sitting Allowance

With the proceeding to get Kenyan’s Chief Justice stopped, ShopaXo has learned that the members of the interview panel are smiling all the way to the bank with the sitting allowance.

For starters, each of the JSC members earns between Ksh. 150,000.00 and Ksh. 250,000.00, which is a responsibility allowance. This is according to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

That is not all, each of the commissioners is also entitled to a special tasks allowance of Ksh. 20,000.00 to Ksh. 25,000.00 each per sitting for disciplinary cases and recruitment purposes.

Moreover, each of the commissioners takes home Ksh.40000.00 per sitting in a country where over 80% of the residents earn less than a dollar a day. With the maximum number of sitting capped at eight, each commissioner could be taking home over half a million shillings.

The JSC sitting allowance is just a side hustle as each of the commissioners has a huge salary from their current jobs.

Among the commissioners, Attorney General Paul Kihara, Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, Justice Mohamed Warsame president of the appeal court, take home up to Ksh. 1200000.00

The current chair, Prof Olive Mugenda representing the public has been along serving VC of Kenyatta University( 2006 to 2016) who is currently the Chairperson of the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH).

Cooking Gas Price To Hit Record High On Return of V.A.T

0

Cooking Gas Price: From July 1 this year, you will pay at least Ksh.350.00 more for cooking gas after the introduction of 16% value-added tax (V.A.T) on the commodity. This is according to an article published in the Business Daily Newspaper.

This will add more pain to families who are already having to cope with the high prices of electricity and fuel amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

From the article, Kenya Revenue Authority said that it would impose the 16% tax at the start of the next financial year, a move that could push households to use alternative sources of energy amid depressed income.

According to KRA, this is in line with the Finance Act that reinstated the VAT on liquefied petroleum gas. This way to be implemented last year in July but was shelved due to concerns of the high cost of living.

Currently, a 6-Kg cooking gas cylinder which most households use retails for between Ksh. 650 and Ksh. 950.00. The 13-kilogram cooking gas retails at Sh2,250, meaning that it would now increase to Sh2,610 when the new tax measures come into force while the 6-Kg cylinder would go up to Ksh. 1200.00.

Already the government is struggling to keep the cost of living down and expensive cooking gas prices would only add another political headache. This comes barely weeks when the government was forced to have the price of fuel unchanged after public outcry, where half of the price of petroleum fuel goes into taxes.

Over the past year, cooking gas prices have not changed much despite the volatility in the global crude oil market during the period when petrol prices oscillated between a low Ksh89.10 a liter in June last year to the current high of Ksh122.80.

Since then, households in the country have been enjoying low cooking gas prices after the Treasury scrapped the tax on LPG to cut costs and boost uptake among the poor who rely on dirty kerosene and charcoal for cooking.

According to an email sent to Business Daily, KRA said, “The effective date of the amendment is 1st July 2021. This means that the supply of liquefied petroleum gas will be subject to VAT at the standard rate of 16 percent from 1st July 2021.”

Cooking Gas Price Fell

Unlike other petroleum products such as petrol and diesel, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is not controlled and is subject that market forces.

For example, the price of a 13-Kg cooking gas fell to below Ksh. 2000.00 after the treasury scrapped the 16% value-added tax.

In 2010, the energy regulator started controlling the prices of other petroleum products to cushion the consumers from irregular price hikes.

The rise in cooking gas prices is expected to pile pressure on households that are currently struggling to foot daily bills due to job losses and drastic cuts in earnings in the wake of COVID-19.

The Ksh. 350 on LPG prices will be the biggest jump in more than two decades and will see high commodity prices witnessed lastly in 2015.
