Shorts, TikTok’s Competitor has been Announced by YouTube

0

YouTube has today announced Shorts, an app that is very like TikTok and which is seen as its main competitor. The app is only available in India for the time being in Beta but with it being planned to other markets soon.

From what we are able to see from the Official Youtube App, Shorts, just like Tiktok has a homepage section dedicated to uploading short videos such as music, multiple videos, and other functions including the ability to change the speed of videos and a countdown for recording.

Given YouTube is the biggest video platform on earth until now, this will be a big App should the idea take off with users. The idea of creating short videos is something that many youth love and YouTube is banking on the success of TikTok to create an even bigger short video platform.

 TikTok

Tiktok remains one of the fastest-growing social media platform, taking the internet by storm and forcing governments around the world to seek its control. India, where Shorts is set to take off, banned Tiktok within its boundaries, while in the US, President Trump has asked Tiktok to sell its operations in the country, or risk being banned. The fear of its growing presence is seen security threat and being a Chinese App, most governments are concerned about it being a spy App.

With all these restrictions, TikTok faces a bleak future, as more governments seek to ban it, while more companies are launching more Apps that are direct competitors. Recently, we saw Instagram, owned by Facebook, launch Reels that is very similar to Tiktok. And to boost its presence, the App was incorporated in Instagram official App, allowing the user to see videos from users you do not follow.

Shorts Challenges

With TikTok’s presence, it will be difficult to have people onboard Shorts. For starters, most people go to YouTube to watch and not to create videos. It seems it is only creators of content on YouTube that will easily tryout Shorts and possibly sign up.

As the App is continually rolled up in other countries, we will be the first to sign up and bring you what the experience is like.

Zuku Launches New Package at 500Mbs

0

Zuku, the Wananchi Group owned internet company has announced a new internet package at 500Mbs in what they say is the fastest internet in Kenya.

The internet will be available on its triple play 500Mbs package, that offer customer three services of internet, TV and phone.

According to a statement sent to newsrooms, customer will access 500Mbs, internet speed, Digital TV and have access to home telephone for Ksh.2.00 under a single package.

Wresting Completion

The company seems to try to maintain its position from Safaricom, which at the end of 2019 beating Zuku to become the leading provider of fixed internet services in Kenya. However, Zuku regained its position at first quarter of this year with increased customer base.

Zuku’s 500Mbps claim is a bold claim that unfortunately for us, we cannot ascertain by us since we do not have access to their service, and neither have we recently used their internet.

However, if what they say is true – especially since their website currently DOES NOT list the 500Mbps package – then on paper they are right about having the fastest speeds compared to their rivals. For example, Safaricom’s highest speed offering for Home Fibre, as is listed on their website, is currently only 40Mbps.

Zuku also claims to have 100Mbps and 200Mbps packages under their Triple Play package, but from their website, we cannot see these packages listed and neither can we find a breakdown of the prices. Under the page, Zuku shows areas Zuku Fibre is available, we have seen the listing of 30Mbps, 50Mbps, 100Mbps, and 250Mbps.

Zuku Pricing

To celebrate this 500Mbps Triple Play Package, the company says they will be upgrading speeds of its current packages to twice their current speeds. This campaign will be dubbed “Twice the Speed X2” and will be part of their efforts to entice new customers.

Moreover, the company shared the pricing which is:

  •  Triple Play 10Mbps will be KES. 2,799
  • Triple Play 20Mbps will be KES. 4,199 and
  • Triple Play 60Mbps will be KES. 5,299

Prices for 100Mbs, 200Mbs, and 500Mbps have not been shared.

The company also said it is pledging to continue innovating and adapting its packages to the new emerging customer trends so as to fully satisfy them.

Do you use Zuku? Share with us what it is like to use the 100Mbs, 200Mbs or 500Mbps.

Eldoret Express Bus Online Booking, Destinations and Contacts

0

In this article, we bring you Eldoret Express Bus Online Booking and Contacts. Eldoret express was once a famed bus company operating from Nairobi’s country bus station to various destination to Western Kenya until the rise of shuttles and other bus companies such as Easy Coach, Modern Coast, Dreamline, took over.

There was a time bus terminals in Kenya were dotted with these buses. Today, Eldoret express Bus is a pale shadow of its former self, though it continues to run services on the route.

Eldoret Express Bus Destinations

Eldoret Express Bus operates from most bus stations and routes to from Nairobi to Western Kenya. If you are traveling on any of the routes listed below and you want to get a taste of what Kenyan Matatu is like, then you can consider them.

  • Nairobi-Nakuru-Lessos-Kapsabet-Chavakali-Kakamega-Mumius and all the towns and trading centers in between.
  • Nairobi-Nakuru- Eldoret-Matunda-Moi’s Bridge- Kitale-Lodwar and all towns in between.
  • Nairobi-Nakuru- Eldoret-Matunda-Moi’s Bridge- Kapenguria.
  • Nairobi-Nakuru- Eldoret-Webuye- Busia.
  • Nairobi-Nakuru-Kericho-Kisumu-Kakamega.

The buses make stops at most of other towns along these routes and operate from these destinations back to Nairobi.

Eldoret Express Bus Online Booking

If this what brought you to this page, then, allow me to disappoint you, this bus company does not have a booking portal, leave alone a website. They do have a Facebook though.

This means it is impossible to make any booking online. Like typical Kenyan Matatus, you are left with one, option, walk to the bus stations and get yourself a ticket, board the bus and wait for other passengers.

And the wait can be very nerve-racking. You have to be very patient as it can take you up to 6 hours for the bus to finally leave after it is full.

These buses do not have a timetable and will only leave once the bus is full of passengers. If you want to test your patience, then try travelling with Eldoret Express bus.

Moreover, they do not have fixed fares along the routes, which change with the traffic available. You could pay triple the price especially during peak seasons.

In short, you cannot book Eldoret Express Bus online.

What do customers say?

We always bring reviews from users to give you a glimpse of what to expect. With a rating of 2.8 out of 5 in there Facebook page, they are not doing very well.

Here are some of the reactions from passengers who used Eldoret Express Bus.

Anne Buyanzi Says, “Eldoret express is seen to be the best but not best, the personnel employed there are very ignorant to listen to client , i traveled with KCT167T , The driver was so drunk you cant(cannot) come to any agreement so pathetic.”

Dan Dan says, “I have head of ignorant people but I think yesterday I came across the most ignorant of them all. I was travelling from Nairobi to Mau Summit in an Eldoret Express reg.KCG750M and on reaching my destination, I requested the conductor to assist me remove my luggage from the boot, only to be told that it had be dropped at Nakuru. It did not stop there the conductor became hash and abusive. The driver then drove off and I was left looking like a fool.”

Lastly here is what Eugene Oketch says, “Worst transport ever. We have been stranded at the bus office in Kisumu for nearly five hours now and we paid a fee of 1000 each….plus the staff are rude towards the customers…they refused to drive us to Nairobi instead they brought in another company’s bus called Sony….worst experience ever….never again will I use Eldoret express again..#lastTime.”

For these comments, it is not difficult to see why they have such a low rating. In fact, I did not find a single positive review.

Conclusion

Eldoret Express Bus is that that you take when all options have been exhausted. You can use better buses such as Easy Coach, Modern Coast, and Dreamline or shuttles such as North Rift, Blueline, Classic Luxury, and Prestige among others.

What is you experience traveling on Eldoret Express Bus, lete hizo feelings hapa.

Tuskys Fires Staff, Closes Branches As Troubles Continue

0

Tuskys Supermarket troubles financial continue after it sacked tens if its workforce and shut four branches across the country.

Shopaxo has learned that the supermarket, owned by Tusker Mattresses Ltd, has sacked workers that are not unionized most of who had gone several months without salaries.

The supermarket, over the past few month has had to shrink it number of branches as its financial woes continue.

The retailer has been running 63 branches spread across Kenya and Uganda, but its operation are now in limbo as rent, electricity and other utilities pull it down.

Power Disconnection

Power has already been disconnected from several branches by Kenya power after they were unable to pay their bills on time, which in turn have turned to expensive diesel generators to keep their businesses running.

Already nine branches have already been shut including the five in Uganda and four in Kenya namely, Tuskys Hakati in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), the Kilifi branch, Nairobi’s K-Mall outlet in Komarock Estate and

In addition to all five Ugandan branches that have remained shuttered for weeks now, Nairobi’s K-Mall outlet in Komarock Estate, Tuskys Hakati in the Nairobi and Eldoret’s Uganda Road.

This follows the closure of three branches that begun in April of this year, with three branches in Nairobi, one in Kitale and another in Mombasa.

Shopaxo leaned that Tuskys has an estimated 2,000 permanent and pensionable employees who are unionised and about 4,000 mainly low-cadre workers who are outsourced from firms such as Artemis Outsourcing Ltd, Amicum and Qrisha.

Tuskys woos continue even as a reported cash injection of Ksh2 billion ($20 million) from an undisclosed Mauritius fund does not seem to have improved the fortunes of the debt-ridden retailer, which inevitably seems to be going the Nakumatt way.

Staff contracted under the outsourcing firms started receiving their termination letters on Thursday, September 10 with promises of them seeing their salaries settled by the end of the month.

One employee who had been summoned to at the Artemis offices on Kimathi Street told The East African, “We are staff that have been outsourced to Tuskys and we have been working there for a while. We have been called to their offices. Some of us are being given termination letters, others are being told that we will get back to you. For those who are being given termination letters  you are given a cheque of which you are not sure whether it is going to bounce or not by the end of the month.”

However, Boniface Kavuvi, the Secretary General of the Kenya Union of Commercial Food and Allied Workers said none of its members had been affected by the layoffs.

“If workers are sacked and happen to be our members they come to us for presentation,” he said.

“You are hereby notified to proceed on unpaid leave effective July 24, 2020, until further notice or when business operations at our client premises will normalise. Kindly note that in the event in the event that the situation of our client does not improve, clause 1 and 13 of your employment contract will take effect immediately,” read in part the letter issued to one of the workers by Artemis Outsourcing Ltd and seen by Shopaxo.

As it faces more woes, Tuskys has not paid thousands of its direct and outsourced employees for the months of July and August, with salary arrears topping an estimated Ksh320 million.
